A violin by Georges Chanot, Paris 1843

Price range: £50,000+

Georges Chanot trained in Mirecourt then established himself as a maker in Paris in 1819. He famously rivalled J.B Vuillaume during this time, as both were significant and talented makers in Paris. Vuillaume remained in Paris, building his workshop whilst Chanot chose to travel Europe, building his reputation as an expert dealer and fantastic copyist.

George Chanot violins, violas and cellos today are held in very high regard and he is considered a great master of the 19th century. Although he did not produce many instruments compared to some of his competitors, what he did produce was of an exceptionally high-quality and are widely sought-after.

Very fine Stradivari copy, sounds great and has a Millant certificate!
