A violin by Charles Boullangier, London, 1878

Charles Boullangier
1823-1888
Charles Boullangier is a maker that encompasses the technical precision of the French school with the freedom of the English school. A great combo!
He worked for JB Vuillaume in Paris for 3 years then with Charles Gand up to the year 1849. He then moved to London, working for Withers for 10 or so years and then setting up his own business. Although it would seem he still made the odd instrument for others when on his own. During his time in London he of course worked alongside with John Lott, the famous English copyist and the other makers of this era including Maucotel and Withers.
His work is extremely fine, particularly his violas and cellos.
This violin is perhaps the finest example we have seen. I originally purchased it from Adam Whone, previous owner of Withers shop and sold it to a former retired viola colleague whom wanted to play violin! Well, he has now fully retired so it’s up for sale.
Beautiful violin.
Sounds as good as it looks.
