Price range: £50,000+
Gaetano Chiocchi
Gaetano Chiocchi established himself as a violin-maker in Padua, where he lived for most of his life. In addition to being an accomplished violinist and luthier, Chiocchi served as the music director for the Ballet Theatre. He studied violin making under Giuseppe Ceruti around 1858 and was awarded medals at making competitions in Florence (1861) and Padua. His body of work is small, but shows care of execution and beautiful varnish.
This viola has his “double purfling” that is often seen on his work.
It is also a perfect size, and excellent condition.
