A violin bow by Claude Thomassin
Claude Thomassin (1850–1934) was an important French bow maker whose work helped bridge the 19th-century Mirecourt tradition and the refined Parisian style of the early 20th century. Born in Mirecourt, he trained in the workshop of Cuniot-Hury before moving to Paris, where he later worked for the prestigious firm of Gand & Bernardel. There, Thomassin became known for producing bows of consistent quality that met the demands of leading professional players.
Thomassin’s bows are often associated with the influence of François Nicolas Voirin, particularly in their elegance and precision. His heads are typically slender and refined, with clean chamfers and a graceful outline. The sticks, usually of excellent pernambuco, tend to be round and well balanced, offering a supple response combined with clarity of articulation. Compared with heavier Peccatte-inspired models, Thomassin bows frequently feel lighter and more agile in the hand.
Musicians value Thomassin bows for their smooth legato, quick off-the-string response, and focused tone. Today, his work remains highly regarded among players and dealers, appreciated for its craftsmanship, reliability, and its place within the distinguished French bow-making lineage.
Sean Bishop ” We have had many Thomassin bows over the years and this is one of the best. Made circa 1925 , it really works. Strong yet draws a beautiful smooth sound. 60.5grams, with a Pierre Guillaume Certificate”
