A viola bow by Victor Fetique, gold mounted, 68.4g

Victor Fétique (1872–1933) was one of the most accomplished French bow makers of the early twentieth century. Born in Mirecourt into a family of archetiers, he trained in the renowned workshops of Cuniot-Hury before working for prestigious Parisian firms, including that of Caressa & Français. In 1913 he established his own workshop in Paris, where he produced bows of exceptional refinement and individuality.

Fétique’s work reflects the strong influence of the Peccatte tradition, particularly in the firmness of the stick and the elegance of the head. His bows are typically crafted from fine pernambuco and are admired for their supple yet controlled playing qualities. Compared with some contemporaries, Fétique often achieved a slightly more flexible feel while maintaining clarity and projection. This balance has made his bows especially appealing to players seeking both nuance and power.

Unlike makers who emphasized strict uniformity, Fétique allowed subtle variation in his work, which gives his bows a distinct personality. Today, Victor Fétique bows are highly regarded by musicians and collectors alike, valued for their craftsmanship, tonal sophistication, and connection to the great French bow-making lineage.

Sean Bishop ” This is an extremely rare viola bow, mounted in Gold! While at 68/69 grams might on paper be regarded as light…it plays beautifully. Pierre Guillaume Certificate”
