A violin bow by Nicolas Maline, 1855

Nicolas Maline (1822–1877) was a respected 19th-century French bow maker whose work reflects the strong Mirecourt tradition. Born in Mirecourt, the historic center of French bow making, Maline later worked in Paris, where he developed his reputation among professional musicians. Although not as widely known as some of his contemporaries, his bows are valued for their craftsmanship, reliability, and attractive playing qualities.

Maline’s work shows the influence of the Peccatte school, particularly in the strength of the stick and the character of the head. His bows are generally made from well-chosen pernambuco and are known for a firm, resilient feel. The heads are often slightly upright with clean chamfers, and the frogs are neatly made, sometimes mounted in silver. Compared with some makers of the period, Maline’s style can appear slightly less refined in finish, but his bows frequently offer excellent balance and projection.

Players often appreciate Maline bows for their clarity and stability, making them dependable tools in both orchestral and solo settings. Today, Nicolas Maline bows are sought after by musicians and dealers who recognize their solid construction and strong connection to the classic 19th-century French tradition.

Sean Bishop “French bows from the 19th Century are hard to come by…and this example is extremely fine. The sound will transform your violin! Pierre Guillaume Cert”
