A violin bow by E. Sartory

Eugène Sartory (1871–1946) is widely regarded as one of the greatest bow makers in history. Born in Mirecourt, France—the historic center of French lutherie—Sartory trained under masters such as Charles Peccatte and later worked in Paris. By the early 20th century, he had established his own workshop and developed a model that would become the gold standard for modern bows.

Sartory bows are celebrated for their strength, balance, and consistency. Unlike some earlier French makers whose work can vary greatly, Sartory aimed for precision and uniformity. His sticks are typically made from high-quality pernambuco, with a round, powerful shaft, a slightly higher head, and a solid, reliable feel in the hand. Players often describe Sartory bows as producing a clear, projecting tone with excellent stability—qualities especially valued by soloists and orchestral professionals.

Because of their playability and durability, Sartory bows remain in high demand today. They are frequently used by top-tier musicians and command strong prices on the international market. More than a century later, Eugène Sartory’s work continues to define the modern ideal of the French bow.

Sean Bishop “This fine violin bow by Sartory was formerly the property of the late Laura Samuel, founding member of the Belcea  String Quartet and leader of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. It’s had some very minor wear so is great value for a bow you know by the previous owner works well”
