Joseph Arthur Vigneron Violin Bows & Cello Bows

A great French bow maker of the late 19th century, Joseph Arthur Vigneron (also known as Vigneron Père) is remembered for creating magnificent bows with an exceptional playing quality. He began work as an archetier under his stepfather and Mirecourt bowmaker, Claude Nicolas Husson and later went to work for Jean-Joseph Martin before leaving for Paris in 1880. Around 1888 Vigneron set up his own workshop. It is here that he developed his own personal style of bow-making, a progression from his earlier work which had heavy influences of the Mirecourt school and Jean Baptiste Vuillaume.

Vigneron was not focused so much on the aesthetic appearance of his bows, but more so on their playing quality. Their notoriously refined and powerful sound during a performance is what makes Vigneron’s work so highly sought-after today.

At Bishop Instruments & Bows we regularly have fine examples of Joseph Vigneron cello bows and violin bows available in our London shop. You can view our Vigneron bows, as well as our large collection of bows by other exceptional makers, by getting in contact and arranging an appointment.
