Vincenzo Sannino, Naples, c1910
Price range: £50,000+
Vincenzo Sannino (1879-1969) can almost be regarded as the only Naples maker to escape the shadows of the Gagliano family with the skills to develop the ability to copy the great 18th century masters while still retaining his own sense of style and model. Most probably self taught, although we see a little bit of the maker Giovanni Tedesco in his early work, he moved to Rome sometime after 1910.
This violin was made around this period on a Ventapane model. With a Sannino label that would appear to be original, even though he dates the violin 1883…he was then 4 years old!!! We can surmise the violin is made circa 1910. Extremely beautiful golden coloured varnish…this is a top quality violin. Silky tone. One of my personal favourites.

Sannino is one of my favourite Naples makers. He is almost the only maker from this city to venture out of the Gagliano model! This violin was featured by Dmitry Gindin in his article on the maker. In mint condition, the brilliant golden vanish makes this violin one of Sannino's finest violins.
