A viola by HC Silvestre, Paris 1890
Price range: £25,000 - £50,000
HC Silvestre, Paris, 1890. Mint condition French viola by one of the great late 19th century makers. Stradivari copy. Golden red varnish.
Hippolyte Chretien Silvestre was the nephew, pupil, and successor of Pierre Silvestre in Lyon. He trained initially in Mirecourt before joining his uncles and taking over the business in 1865. He moved the business to Paris in 1884 and eventually came to formal association with Maucotel. He did very fine copies of Stradivari and Guarneri and used excellent materials.
“People often put down French violas, but this viola is in a different league. Great sounding.”

Such a pure example of Silvestre's best work. Mint condition and so easy to play. Lovely Stradivari copy that the French makers seemed to excel at.
