Established in 1866, Charles Nicolas Gand and the Bernardel brothers Gustave and Ernest formed the highly prolific and renowned Gand and Bernardel firm. From 1866 to 1901, the firm produced over 1,000 instruments and bows and became one of the most prominent firms in violin making history. Before Caressa & Français bought the firm in 1901, Gand and Bernardel trained and employed some of the finest luthiers and archetiers of the time including Charles Peccatte, Joseph Henry, and Claude Thomassin. This particular viola is currently in mint condition and an outstanding piece of French craftsmanship and artistry. A beautifully flamed, two-piece maple back, covered in a rich, red varnish on a golden ground. With the ease of producing a bright and rich tone, this viola is suitable for the established musician or aspiring soloist. Back length: 16 1/4 inch
