Giuseppe Gagliano violin maker

Joseph Gagliano, also known as Giuseppe, is part of the Gagliano family dynasty of makers that were responsible for producing some of the most sought after fine instruments throughout the 18th and 19th century in the Neapolitan tradition. Joseph’s father Nicolo, also known as Nicola and Nicolaus, is the most famous luthier in the family. Joseph (Giuseppe) and his brother Antonio would often finish some of their father’s violins with their own scrolls, selling them under his name.

The brothers are thought to have overseen the most prolific period of making instruments under the family name. A Gagliano violin made by Joseph or Giuseppe Gagliano and his brother features their signature scrolls and their style was copied by many other makers in Naples.
