Masterclass with violist Hartmut Rohde

Young violists from Junior Royal Academy of Music, Junior Royal College of Music, Junior Guildhall, Menuhin School, Junior Trinity Laban and Purcell School will be taking part.

Hartmut Rohde is one of the leading and most sought after European violists , renowned for his stylistic versatility and rhetorical perceptiveness. He is especially interested in bringing a historically informed approach to his interpretations of the classical, romantic and contemporary viola repertoire. Among Rhode’s regular chamber music partners are Janine Jansen, Christian Tetzlaff, Kolja Blacher, Lars Vogt and David Geringas. He holds a professorship at the University of the Arts Berlin, and is founding member of the renowned Mozart Piano Quartet which undertakes extensive worldwide tours.

As a violist he has performed at all the major prestigious international venues and festivals including Carnegie Hall, Berlin Festival, Ravina Festival USA etc .Concerto performances with major orchestras including Munich Symphony, NDR Radiophilharmonie, Bremen Philharmonic to name but a few. Rohde is also a conductor and has a large list of major orchestras and Chamber orchestras he has worked with.

As a Viola teacher Hartmut’s students have gone on to win auditions at major European Orchestras. He is currently a visiting Guest Professor at the Royal Academy of Music, London.

Rohde plays on a fine viola by Ansaldo Poggi of Bologna, made in 1952 purchased from Bishop instruments & bows.

During the masterclass Sean Bishop will be giving a brief talk on this fine instrument.
